N-type Connectors: What They Are and How to Use Them

N type connectors are the most commonly used RF connectors in the world. This connector can handle relatively high power compared to BNC or TNC connectors. The standard version operates up to 11 GHz, while the precision version operates up to 18 GHz.

There are two versions of the N-type connector that are available:

There are subtle mechanical differences between the two versions of the Type-N connector, and the two types cannot be matched. Connecting two different types of connectors together can damage them. The 50Ω connector system has a larger center pin, which provides a lower characteristic impedance, which can cause irreversible damage when mated with a 75Ω connector. Some manufacturers provide their connectors with enough springs to accommodate this, while others don't, so it's best to differentiate between the two standards.

The peak power capability of the N connector is determined by the voltage breakdown in the center pin area. However, the average power rating depends on the level of heating that occurs at the center contact, especially due to the resistance at the contact point. This depends on the frequency due to the skin effect.

 

The actual power handling capability of a specific connector can be found in the manufacturer's data sheet for that specific connector. There are slight differences between manufacturers due to the different materials used for contacts and finishes.

 

As a rule of thumb, a fully loaded (VSWR = 1:1.0) new connector might handle 5000 watts at 20 MHz, but might drop to 500 watts at 2 GHz. I have.
