The Connector Housing Common Materials

Usually there are PBT, NYLON, ABS, PC, LCP and other materials, but in principle, materials with better flame resistance are used.

 

1. PBT

Generally used PBT material plus 20-30% glass fiber, with anti-cracking, anti-shock, anti-electric ability, good wear resistance, low friction coefficient, good self-lubricating effect, good oil resistance and chemical resistance. It has good dielectric strength under high temperature and high humidity. Its shrinkage rate is between 0.6% and 3.0%, and its temperature resistance is about 230°C. It has good formability and flame resistance, and is commonly used as a rubber compound for connector products.

 

2. NYLON66, NYLON6T

Nylon has good toughness, self-lubrication, chemical resistance and wear resistance. PA6T has better toughness than PA9T, and the heat distortion temperature is 290 degrees Celsius, which is very suitable for SMT connectors. PA46 products have high strength and good toughness, and are not prone to cracks.

 

 

3.ABS

It has good impact toughness, oil resistance, wear resistance, easy molding, good hardness, good rigidity, temperature resistance of about 100 ° C, and is generally used in auxiliary products in connectors.

 

 

4. LCP

LCP, liquid crystal polymer, is a material with very good electrical insulating properties, which can maintain its electrical properties continuously at 200 to 300 degrees Celsius without being affected, and can reach temperatures of 316 degrees Celsius with intermittent use. In addition, LCP has very strong corrosion resistance, and will not suffer any corrosion in 90% acid or 50% alkaline environment. LCP also has excellent thermal stability and resistance to heat and chemicals.

An alloy of copper and zinc, the color varies according to the zinc content. Although brass is a material with good electrical conductivity, it is prone to deformation and rapid fatigue after repeated bending. It is usually used as a fixed contact in an inexpensive connector, or as other metal parts in the connector. Connectors with brass contacts should not be used where good resiliency is required. Of course, due to the low cost, brass can still be used competently as a contact in many places.

The color of copper and tin alloys varies according to the tin content. Generally, copper alloys other than brass are called bronze in a broad sense.

Phosphor bronze is harder than brass while maintaining longer-term elasticity. It is often used as a material for contacts operating at temperatures below 300°C. For most connectors with infrequent mating, or normal flexing of the contacts, the use of phosphor bronze ensures good reliability.

Beryllium bronze has far better mechanical properties than brass or phosphor bronze. Beryllium bronze parts set and harden after annealing, virtually retaining their shape permanently, and it is also the material most resistant to mechanical fatigue. In applications where frequent insertion and removal and high reliability are required, beryllium bronze is recommended.
