What is DB9 connector?

25/10/2022 Leon

DB9 has the smallest "footprint" of any D-Subminiature connector. The prefix "D" represents the D shape of the connector housing. The DB9 connector is mainly used for serial ports, allowing asynchronous data transmission according to the RS-232 standard (RS-232C).

The DB9 connector has been a common serial port connection for decades. Nine positions are available for data transfer, and the enclosure is automatically grounded to the chassis. These nine-pin connectors are available in vertical or right-angle orientation for top or side entry for cables. D-sub offers a variety of plating options to suit application cycles, as well as a variety of mounting options for a very secure connection.

What is a DB9 connector?

The DB9 connector (originally named DE-9) is an analog socket for the D-Subminiature (D-Sub) connector family, with 9 pins. DB9 has the smallest "footprint" of any D-Subminiature connector. The prefix "D" represents the D shape of the connector housing. The DB9 connector is mainly used for serial ports, allowing asynchronous data transmission according to the RS-232 standard (RS-232C). Note that there are DB9-DB25 adapters that can easily convert DB9 sockets to DB25 and vice versa.

DB9 Connector Types

There are at least three types of cable end D-Sub connectors. They differ by the method used to attach the wires to the contacts: soldering, insulation displacement, or crimping.

1. DB9 DSUB connector with solder contacts

The solder contacts have a cavity into which the stripped tinned wire is inserted and then soldered.

2. DB-9 DSUB connector with insulation displacement contacts (IDC or I.D.C)

Insulation Displacement Contacts (I.D.C.) are designed for automated assembly. Press the flat cable over the contacts, with the back of the contacts pronged, and pierce the insulation of all the wires at the same time.

3. DB9 DSUB connector with crimp terminals

Crimp contacts are wired by inserting stripped wire ends into cavities on the back of the contacts. Then use a crimping tool to crimp the cavity. Then insert the contacts into the connector. The pins can be removed later using a tool inserted into the back of the connector. This "break-after" is useful when pins on the device are damaged.

DE9 DSUB Connector Termination Styles - Right Angle and Right Angle

There are also two types of PCB mount connectors, straight or right-angle termination styles. This type of connector has built-in solder tails for easy mounting on a PCB.
