9 knowledge points of D-Sub connector

Serial communication was once all the rage - it once became one of the most common methods for connecting peripherals such as printers, scanners, mice, and joysticks to personal computers. The most commonly used connector type for serial communication is the D-subminiature (D-shaped subminiature) connector, also known as the D-sub connector. Although D-sub connectors have been replaced in some applications, they still have value in use today and are used in various ways.
The following lists nine knowledge points about D-Sub connectors:
1. The D-Sub connector was once one of the smallest connectors used in computer systems. The D-sub connector is named after its D-shaped metal connector shell, which surrounds the pins or sockets. These pins or sockets are arranged in two or more parallel rows for carrying strings. Row data.
2. The connector shell is divided into five different sizes, and each shell size can have two different pin configurations. The standard housing size has two rows of pins, while the high-density housing has three rows of pins.
3. Since the D-sub connector uses each pin to carry serial data separately, it is extremely easy to customize. DB9 is a standard configuration with the smallest shell size. There are 9 pins in the shell, the size is 1.3cm (height) x 3.1cm (width). The largest high-density configuration of the shell size is HD78, with 78 pins in the shell, the size is 1.5cm (height) × 6.7cm (width).
4. The length of the cable with a D-sub connector can be much longer than other cables. The current general standard RS-232 for serial data does not specify any length limitation, and when special equipment is used, the RS-232 cable length can reach hundreds of meters or more. In contrast, the length of the USB is limited to 5 meters.
5. Serial communication is often slow, especially in the case of long-distance transmission. Communication interruption can cause the software on the computer to stop unexpectedly.
6. D-Sub connectors are bulky, especially when compared with new-style connectors. This makes it difficult for such connectors to be connected and disconnected in a narrow space. However, the right-angle adapter can achieve a 90-degree turn without damaging the connector, which helps the application of D-Sub connectors in small spaces.
7. Since the pins in the D-Sub connector housing are exposed, they are prone to bend or break. The best way to avoid pin damage is to protect the pins with D-sub plugs or socket protective covers to prevent them from being damaged when they are not mated. In addition, the male-to-female converter and female head protector help reduce the stress on the connector caused by repeated plugging and unplugging.
8. D-Sub connectors can be mated without using thumbscrews, but this type of friction fit cannot guarantee that they will always be mated in place. On the other hand, although thumb screws can achieve a firmer connection, they increase the time required for connector plugging and unplugging.
9. At present, there are still many devices with DB9 ports, and there are also various optional technologies for the conversion of traditional products with D-sub connectors. Through the converter between RS232/422/485 and USB, Ethernet, and other technologies, you can still use old serial devices for various modern computers.
