BMA connectors are incredibly versatile electrical power and signal connectors used in a wide range of applications. They provide reliable connections for steady current flow and crisp signal transmission.

BMA connectors are incredibly versatile electrical power and signal connectors used in a wide range of applications. They provide reliable connections for steady current flow and crisp signal transmission.

History of BMA Connectors

BMA connectors were developed in the early 1960s by Binder, the world leading manufacturer of medical connectors. They aimed to create a line of modular connectors   that could be used universally across myriad applications.

The goal was to minimize the immense number of completely unique connectors previously used for different purposes. BMA offered a standardized platform while still providing countless variations to suit any need.

As luck would have it,  the design was a roaring success! BMA connectors rapidly gained popularity for their reliability, modularity and wide range of options. They've been used extensively ever since.

Types of BMA Connectors

A huge selection of BMA connectors are available, differing in shape, size, gender and number of poles (connections). Here are the main categories:

Round connectors

The original BMA connectors are circular in shape, offering 1 to 37 poles in widths 9mm to 22mm. They feature locking collars to fasten connections securely.

Round BMAs are perfect for applications needing small, close-spacing connectors like medical devices and laboratory equipment.

Rectangular connectors

For higher pole counts and heavier current loads, rectangular BMA connectors up to 72 poles are used.

They provide increased surface area for electrical contacts and locking tabs along the sides for secure mating.

Rectangular BMA connectors dominate in industrial automation, factory robotics, marine and renewable energy applications.

Specialty connectors

BMA also offers many specialty connector types for niche uses:

  • Hybrid connectors - Combining round and rectangular connector sections
  • Push-pull - Quick connect/disconnect
  • Waterproof - Sealed against moisture intrusion
  • High temperature  - Rated for up to 180°C
  • Built-in EMI filters - Protect against electromagnetic interference

Features and Benefits

BMA connectors have many desirable traits that make them go-to choices for engineers:

  • Modularity - Components can be selected à la carte to achieve any desired configuration.
  • Reliability - Strong crimp or solder electrical connections ensure low contact resistance.
  • Versatility - Wide selection of sizes, shapes, poles and specialty versions.
  • Standardization - Common shape and keying system across product lines.
  • Durability - Robust metal shell and contacts withstand repeated mating cycles.
  • Safety - Many options include protective features like shielding and latching.
  • Compatibility - Compatible with major international standards like DIN, EN, ISO and NEMA.
  • Cost - Competitively priced for the value they provide.

So in a nutshell,  BMA connectors elegantly solve the age-old problem of "one size does not fit all". They represent the sweet spot of versatility, reliability and affordability that makes them irreplaceable in countless applications across industries.
