You can find the firmware source code and documentation on Github: https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-firmware, as well as nodemcu-flasher: https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flasher, a Windows only tools to flash the firmware to a module. There’s also a separate tool called esptool: http://www.whatimade.today/flashing-the-nodemcu-firmware-on-the-esp8266-linux-guide/ that will let you flash nodemcu from Linux.
